VMware Introduction

VMware IS server consolidation. Virtualization is a software technology that is transforming the IT infrastructure and changing the way that people compute. Possibly, the first major shift in the computing paradigm in over twenty years.

Today’s powerful Intel and AMD computer hardware was originally designed to run only a single operating system and a single application, but virtualization makes it possible to run multiple operating systems and multiple applications on the same computer at the same time, increasing the utilization and flexibility of hardware.

Virtualization works because it leverages all of the good things about the emerging power of x86 computers and shared storage.

VMware ESX Server

VMware ESX Server is virtual infrastructure software for partitioning, consolidating and managing systems in mission-critical environments. ESX Server and VMware Virtual Infrastructure Nodes provide a highly scalable virtual machine platform with advanced resource management capabilities, which can be managed by VMware VirtualCenter.

Ideally suited for enterprise datacenters, ESX Server minimizes the total cost of ownership (TCO) of computing infrastructure by increasing resource utilization, minimizing maintenance downtime and maximizing server manageability.

VMware ESX Server allows enterprises to:

  • Consolidation of branch office and datacenter mission-critical applications is simplified with ESX Server. Infrastructure services such as Exchange, SQL Server, Notes and Oracle, running on diverse operating systems onto fewer enterprise-class servers, including blade servers provides more reliability and availability of data.
  • VMware Virtual Infrastructure Nodes (comprising ESX Server, VMware Virtual SMP, VMotion and a VirtualCenter Agent) are managed with VMware VirtualCenter. Together they transform your infrastructure into a virtual infrastructure. Organizations can respond faster to business demands with instant provisioning of virtual machines and dynamic resource allocation to those virtual machines as business needs change.
  • Dramatically improve and lower the cost of Disaster Recovery capability creating a unified disaster recovery (DR) platform. This allows many production servers to be recovered on a single DR server, eliminating the need for costly 1-to-1 mapping of production and DR servers. The hardware independence of virtual machine frees customers from the need to maintain identical hardware at their production and DR sites.

VMware Virtual SMP

I like VMware but I have a very compute intensive task. Virtual SMP makes that problem go away. You can virtualize even your most compute intensive applications by having a single virtual machine use up to four physical processors simultaneously.

Symmetrical Multi Processing provides for multiple processors working in parallel within a single virtual machine.

Run resource intensive applications in virtual environments. Databases, ERP and CRM are just a few of the applications that can be enhanced with this technology.

VMware Infrastructure 3

VMware Infrastructure 3 is a suite of industry-leading infrastructure virtualization software that virtualizes servers, storage and networking, allowing multiple unmodified operating systems and their applications to run independently in virtual machines while sharing physical resources. The suite delivers comprehensive virtualization, management, resource optimization, application availability and operational automation capabilities.

  • Increase hardware utilization and reduce hardware requirements with server consolidation ratios commonly exceeding ten virtual machines per physical processor.
  • Reduce required datacenter square footage, rack space, power, cooling, cabling, storage and network components by reducing the sheer number of physical machines.
  • Decrease labor cost by simplifying and automating labor and resource intensive IT operations.

What end users say about VMware Infrastructure 3:

  • Bare metal architechture
    • Run at near native VM performance
  • Small footprint
    • Compact 32MB form factor
  • Server integration
    • Pre-integrated server hardware from leading vendors
  • Scalability
    • Support up to 64GM of RAM
    • Consolidate onto very large servers with up to 128GB RAM
  • Performance
    • Transparent page sharing
    • RAM over-commitment to increase memory use
    • Network performance optimization
    • Large memory pages and hardware page table support
    • Paravirtualization support for virtualization aware Linux operating systems

VMware VirtualCenter

VirtualCenter intelligently optimizes resources, ensures high availability to all applications in virtual machines and makes your IT environment more responsive with virtualization-based distributed services such as VMware DRS, VMware High Availability (HA) and VMware VMotion.

Features Include:

  • Centralized Virtual Infrastructure Management Console: View and organize thousands of virtual machines and the hosts running them from a single location. Prevent unauthorized access and assign capabilities to authorized users. Understand how resources are being utilized and adjust allocations to optimize the data center. Eliminate redundant tasks and receive notifications in case of service interruptions.
  • Instant Provisioning Deployment Wizard: Deploy new servers within minutes using a template-based deployment wizard. VirtualCenter leverages the uniformity of virtual hardware to make instant provisioning possible.
  • Virtual Infrastructure SDK: Closely integrate 3rd-party management software with VirtualCenter through the Virtual Infrastructure SDK, to seamlessly integrate existing solutions with the VMware virtual infrastructure.

VMware Workstation

Computing professionals are always looking for ways to maximize their compute resources and utilize all of the tools that are available in various operating systems. A perfect example of that is Windows and Linux. Enter VMware Workstation. It becomes simple to create and run multiple virtual machines on your desktop or laptop computer. You can convert an existing physical PC into a VMware virtual machine, or create a new virtual machine from scratch. Each virtual machine represents a complete PC, including the processor, memory, network connections and peripheral ports

  • VMware Workstation runs on both Windows and Linux host operating systems and supports most desktop and server editions of Microsoft Windows, Linux, Solaris x86, Netware, and FreeBSD as guest operating systems.
  • Administrators and enterprise IT professionals can test software, including new applications, application updates, and operating system patches, in virtual machines prior to deployment on physical PCs or servers in a production environment. IT help desk departments can create and reference a virtual library of end-user configurations to help them resolve problems more quickly.
  • Virtual machines created in Workstation can be deployed to the other desktop and server virtualization platforms offered by VMware. Introducing VMware Workstation virtualization to the desktop is an ideal first step to transforming your physical IT infrastructure into virtual infrastructure.
  • Improve team collaboration. The portability and hardware-independent properties of virtual machines, coupled with new features in VMware Workstation, lets users easily share development environments and pre-packaged testing configurations without risk, and also facilitates collaboration between development and QA.

VMware Fusion

Seamlessly run Windows applications along side Mac applications with the Unity features in VMware Fusion. Find and launch Windows applications quickly with the VMware Fusion launcher. Switch between Windows and Mac applications quickly with Exposé. Minimize Windows applications to the Mac OS X Dock.

Play Windows games on your Mac. Create powerful multi-core virtual machines and run 32- and 64-bit operating systems with ease. Use your iSight camera in Windows and gain access to Windows-only USB 2.0 devices.

VMware Fusion makes it easy to install Windows as a virtual machine on your Intel-based Mac, and makes a perfect complement to Apple Boot Camp. Use your existing Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine, or use the built-in Windows Easy Install to install a fresh copy of Windows on a new virtual machine.
